Change of topic

Sport and the Media
Research into the relationships between sports agencies and the media Relationship between media conglomerates and sports agencies. Attraction and retention of audiences via sport in order to promote other products. The representation of ideology (suchas global unity/competition/nation, gender). Proliferation of sports covered including minorityinterest sports. Media as sports watchdogs and commentators; as source of inter-mediacompetition. Sport and advertising/ sponsorship. Use of new technologies in sportscoverage.

How is sport "narrativised" by the media? Secondary reading from the three sports texbooks.

Primary research - press buildup, tv coverage and press post-match coverage for big European football game. Analysis of how it uses codes from fiction etc... Also audience consumption and how it is affected by the coverage.

You'll have to work VERY HARD to catch up because you have changed your idea 2 weeks in...

Your first ideas

Crime and the media.

Media coverage of race and the media's role in producing racism (I think that's what you mean). This could be a very good area, though you'll find it impossible to quantify "the media's role" in the production of attitudes and beliefs. Better to look at the ways that the media has handled issues like eastern European immigration, or Asylum. There's pleny of stuff avaliable about this, and of course it follows on from our work in certain British films.

I would say there's more to this one than your Sport and the Media idea - which is a bit too specific.

Primary research could be to explore people's vies on enlargement of EU etc and look at where they get their facts and ideas from, though as I said this might be hard to pin down. We probably need to think about this together a bit more. See me about it, and about reading you could start on.
